Gravel roads make up more than two-thirds of Namibia’s roads. We suggest renting a 4×4. Since Windhoek, where most rental car companies are located, is 45 kilometers west of Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will need to make arrangements with your rental car company for a transfer from the airport to Windhoek. Alternatively, please contact us and we will arrange for you to rent a car and move. Rates available upon request.

Stately historic buildings designed in the German architectural style of the turn of the century add a lot to the area. You can see the historic seat of government, also known as the Tintenpalast, which means palace of ink in German, and other buildings that add to the city’s unique charm. With its graceful sphere, the Christuskirche, right next to the Tintenpalast, provides a striking landmark for the region. The country’s past is reflected in the white-walled Alte Feste, which was once a fort and is now a museum. Windhoek is located at a height of 1650 meters above sea level. Windhoek has a population of approximately 450 000 people, making it the country’s largest city.
The majority of Windhoek’s population lives in Katutura, the city’s Bantu-speaking suburb. The Oshiwambo word katutura means “the place where we don’t want to visit.” Along Independence Avenue (the former “Kaiserstrasse” – German for “emperor’s street”), old colonial houses stand side by side with new, post-independence Namibian structures.

After clearing customs and immigration at Eros Airport, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and assist you to your circuit light aircraft transfer to Kulala Desert Lodge via Hosea Kutako International Airport.
To get to Sossusvlei, you’ll ride over the Namib Desert and the endless dune landscape.
The Namib is a long and narrow desert that extends over 1900 kilometers from South Africa’s Cape Province to Angola. It is thought to be one of the world’s oldest deserts. The Namib is cut across by two year-round water-bearing rivers. Namibia’s northern border is formed by the Kunene River, while its southern border is formed by the Orange River. It stretches up to 200 kilometers inland in the driest regions.
The small village of Aus is situated in the Karas Region of southern Namibia, perched above the Namib Desert plains and tucked away in the rugged Aus Mountains. The unusual botanical diversity of the surrounding arid landscape is well-known. Aus is an excellent base for exploring the region and seeing the main attraction: the Namib Desert’s feral horses, which roam freely in the sparsely vegetated plains.
At Garub, only twenty kilometers from the village, you can see these wild desert-adapted animals at the water trough. Visitors can learn more about the Succulent Karoo by visiting the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, which is home to the world’s most biodiverse desert, and taking a scenic walk to see fascinating indigenous fauna and flora. Don’t miss out on the chance to camp under the clear Namibian night sky and ride across the vast desert landscape.

Early departure to the Sossusvlei gives you the chance to scale one of the world’s highest sand dunes. The dune landscape’s unique color example will undoubtedly inspire you, and you will undoubtedly be able to take beautiful photographs here.
Sossusvlei is a dune wonderland with 300-meter-high dunes surrounding a massive, dried-up pan. The rich tints of the dunes range from pale apricot to bright reds and oranges, and they stretch as far as the eye can see. The Tsauchab River flows into the pan during a successful rainy season, creating a haven for water birds. Oryx, springbok, and ostriches can be seen feeding on the sparse vegetation along the watercourses even during the dry season.
This is the Vlei itself, where the waters of the Tsauchab River are now disappearing into the Namib’s red sand.
A visit to the Sesriem Canyon can be added to this.
You walk through the Sesriem Canyon before leaving the sand dunes. The Sesriem Canyon, a deep ravine that is best explored on foot, is a striking natural feature of the region. The canyon’s name means “six belts” because early settlers used it as a source of water, drawing water with six lengths of leather. It’s where a 1 km-long gorge has been carved out by centuries of erosion. Deep pools of water at the bottom of the gorge, which drops 30 to 40 meters, are replenished after good rains.
Return to the lodge in the afternoon and engage in one of your favorite activities before dinner.

Between the Namib Desert and the cold Atlantic Ocean lies this idyllic area, also known as Namibia’s playground. This desert metropolis is a symphony of thrills, excitement, discovery, and relaxation. Swakopmund has many magnificent colonial and Bavarian-style houses.
Namibians consider Swakopmund to be a welcome respite from the inland sun. It is also well-liked by tourists due to its old-world charm and laid-back atmosphere. It was founded in 1892 during the German colonial era and served as the territory’s main harbor for many years. The distinctive German colonial character has been well preserved, and many of the old buildings are still functional today. The Woermann Building, which was built in 1905, now serves as an art gallery. Previously, the Woermann Tower was used to keep an eye on ships entering the harbor. Such historic buildings worth visiting include “Die Alte Kaserne,” “Hohenzollern Haus,” and the Railway Station House.

You have a fun boat trip scheduled in the Walvis Bay Lagoon today. Fur seals, pelicans, and dolphins are often seen here. A fun culinary setting is provided by Namibian oysters and iced South African sparkling wine.
Following your boat ride, you have the choice of participating in one of the many activities available in and around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, or exploring the city on your own, strolling through the woodcarving market, or simply strolling along the beach and sipping a cup of coffee right on the beach.
Swakopmund is a coastal town on Namibia’s spectacular coast that is renowned for its sprawling tree-lined streets, colonial architecture, and otherworldly desert terrain.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Swakopmund Airport, where you will be met and escorted to your circuit light aircraft for your onward air transfer to Doro Nawas by a Wilderness Safaris representative.
You’ll fly over Damaraland’s unique mountain landscape and take in the breathtaking scenery.
The Damaraland and Kaokoveld in Namibia’s dry northwest are part of the mosaic of ethnically diverse regions that make the country so fascinating and diverse. Until recently, Damaraland was a remote area where locals’ lives had remained largely unchanged over the centuries. With high mountains, grassland, and plains, it is a region of stark contrasts.
Before dinner, you have the option of participating in two activities of your choosing when you arrive at the lodge.

The Skeleton Coast is a fascinating sight to see today.
From the Ugab river course to the perennial Kunene River on the Angolan border, the Skeleton Coast Park extends for nearly 500 kilometers. Fly-in safaris with a licensed operator are required to visit the northern half beyond the Hoanib river course (a wilderness full of dunes with no roads or other infrastructure). Gravel plains and low hills dominate the southern half, with saltpans and dunes thrown in for good measure. The plains are crossed by ghost rivers.
The Skeleton Coast gets its name from the rusted hulls of sunken ships. The ocean and desert are always present, and seeing wildlife is a matter of chance. The sudden sight of a waterhole in a sandy river course, a patch of green where springbok or gemsbok graze within sight of the sea while dolphins gamble in the surf, appears nothing short of miraculous on a calm clear morning. The beaches are patrolled by black-backed jackals and brown hyenas, and African elephants also migrate down river courses from the interior.

Ongava Lodge is located at the popular Etosha National Park’s entrance.
Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s largest parks, covering 22 270 square kilometers of saline desert, savannah, and woodlands. The Etosha Pan, a large, shallow depression covering approximately 5000 square kilometers, is its defining feature. The pan is a desolate expanse of white broken mud that shimmers with mirages on most days for the majority of the year. The Etosha experience is unlike any other, with huge herds of game and the eerie “great white place of dry water” as a backdrop.
The park is home to 114 mammal species, including many uncommon and endangered species like the black rhino and black-faced impala. The park is home to a variety of bird species, including the European bee-eater and many wader species, about one-third of which are migratory.

The petroglyphs and San rock art of Twyfelfontein are within easy reach.
Sixteen guest units (including a family room) blend in with the scenery, and feature private verandas and outdoor showers. Sleeping out under the stars is also an option. Nature drives and walks reveal more of the desert’s surprising and superbly-adapted flora and fauna.

The name “Skeleton Coast” conjures up romantic images of desolate beauty, and proudly remote Hoanib in the Kaokoveld does not disappoint. The dry bed of the Hoanib River supports a thin green ribbon of vegetation and the wild beaches of the Atlantic coast are within reach, with their noisy seal colonies and eerily quiet shipwreck remnants.
Eight large en-suite tents (including one family unit) and the main area provide shady viewpoints, while nature drives into the surrounding area reveal a wealth of desert-adapted wildlife. Desert-adapted lion and brown hyaena may also be glimpsed in this vast but far from lifeless landscape.

Ongava Lodge is one of Namibia’s premier lodges on one of the country’s most important private game reserves.
The well-established Ongava Lodge is situated in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park. Placed as it is close to the top of a hill in the foothills of the Ondundozonanandana range, the vantage point is beautiful and overlooks a well-frequented waterhole and the plains beyond.

Many people don’t see the point in driving through a bushveld looking for animals, but there’s so much more to it. wild animals are seen as a nuisance in most inhabited areas, but if you’ve never seen the magic of animals in their natural habitat, untouched by humans, you’ve been missing out! looking at zoo animals in their enclosures might be considered nice, because you’re almost 100% guaranteed that you’ll see them, but that’s not how they behave in the wild. nothing beats the thrill of finding a pride of lions laying in the shade, or walking across the road right in front of you, and once you’ve felt the reverberations of an elephant’s trumpet through your bones, you’ll be hooked! our clients often come back for more, because you never know what you’re going to see next…

We operate from hazyview and will collect you from any of the lovely holiday resorts, lodges or nearby locations. our vehicles depart at different times in different seasons… for full day or morning safaris, we leave at 5am in october to march and at 5h30am in april to september. for afternoon safaris, we leave at 13h00 pm in the afternoons. most of the wildlife in the park prefers hiding in the shade during the hot afternoons, so we highly recommend joining us for the earlier safaris to get the most out of your trip.
Anything to do with the word “game” whilst on a safari—like game drives or looking for game—all refers to wild animals in safari context. you might also encounter “game” on the menus of some traditional restaurants, which basically means that you’re ordering wild buck meat, or even warthog.
Even though the knp falls in a malaria area, most foreigners are pleasantly surprised at how few mosquitoes are actually encountered whilst on a safari. these mosquitoes breed in water, and even in the middle of our rainy season in december, we don’t consider them to be a relentless menace. despite what you might have been told, mosquitoes are not a plague in the knp and although we are always cautious about malaria, the locals in and around the knp do not run around with repellents all the time.
If you’re really worried and consider yourself or anyone joining you on the safari to be particularly susceptible to this rare disease, be sure to consult your gp. there are many places in the park where you can buy mosquito repellent containing deet—this is the most vital ingredient in insect repellents as it has been proven to repel the malaria-carrying mosquitoes effectively.
Even though the kruger park is basically a giant protected bushveld and sparsely populated, there are many little “towns” and camps where you can find anything from grocery stores, souvenir stores, petrol stations and much more.
As mentioned before, there are many places in the knp where we can stop over for lunch where you can buy take-away food or choose to have a meal at the various restaurants. we usually have lunch at skukuza, but this is not set in stone.
Two words: comfortable and practical. seeing as you’re going to be driving around for the majority of the time on your safari experience, it is advisable that you wear clothes that are not too tight and not too hot. winters can be cold, so check the forecast beforehand, but summers are the opposite—just take a jacket with you in case it gets chilly, and stay away from high heels, ladies! we might stop on top of rocky mountains to give you an in-person taste of the spectacular views in the knp. trust me, it’s spine-chilling raw beauty.
You’ll be surprised at the true meaning of this term—it actually refers to the five most feared animals in the bush. they are extremely dangerous to hunt on foot and also rather rare. the big 5 consists of african lions, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. it really is a tourist attraction and many safari companies utilise this term as a major marketing strategy.
We cannot guarantee that there will be sightings of all five animals in the big 5, but we can guarantee that we will do our best to find them. elephants are massive, this is true, but in the lush untouched bushveld of the kruger, if they don’t want to be seen, they can easily disappear behind the trees mere meters away from you. they tend not to be too shy, unlike leopards. rhinos are extremely scarce, but our guides know where their usual grazing spots are, and a pride of lions would attract so much attention that our radios would notify us if there’s a sighting nearby. nevertheless, you are guaranteed to see a very diverse variety of animals in the kruger national park.
Children under 8 are more than welcome on privately hired open vehicles, yes. this is purely out of consideration for our other clients who do not have children and might not have the patience for their unique outlook and excitement about each wild animal we encounter. all children under 12 have discounted safari rates, as well as half-price conservation fees to enter the kruger national park.

I cannot even begin to list the most amazing experiences we’ve had whilst on safaris in the knp! there are too many to count, each encounter very different but equally remarkable. if you consider the size of the knp and how many animals call it their home, you can only begin to imagine the things we’ve seen—from a ride of lionesses to the birth of a brand-new baby giraffe. each time our jaws drop at the splendour of mother nature. you will have to come and see it for yourself.
Placing yourself in the middle of a nature reserve where there are numerous predators and dangerous animals could sound pretty intimidating, but rest assured, kurt safari guides all have in-depth knowledge about the behaviour of these animals and would never put your life in danger. elephants can be aggressive if they have young ones to protect and even lone elephant bulls have charged at cars that don’t know when to back away, but obtaining injuries from wild animals whilst on a safari is very rare and you need not be worried—just enjoy the ride.
