Mpumalanga means “the place of the rising sun” and is the first province in South Africa to see the sun rise and all of the best Kruger National Park safaris start before the sun is up. This is the ideal time of day to enter the park, as it is still cool outside. Not knowing what to expect, after a short drive to the park, we enter the gates and your guide will take you to some of the best areas of the park to find the wildlife including the Big 5 and plains game. This is also the finest time of the day to see predators.
(Breakfast and Dinner included, Lunch on own account)
On this day, we visit Gods Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon (the world’s 3rd largest, and only green, canyon), the stunning Lisbon Waterfall, the iconic 3 Rondavels and the town of Graskop.
We start with a delicious hot breakfast at the lodge at 7:30 am. Your guide will meet you at 8 am in a closed air-conditioned vehicle. The Panorama Route begins 45 minutes into your drive from Hazyview, and we climb almost 1000 meters in elevation to the Northern Drakensburg Mountain range. The temperatures vary a lot from Hazyview, often being cool and wet, so bring a jacket and also pack some comfortable walking shoes as we do some lovely walks.
We visit God’s Window gives travellers a stunning view from the escarpment. From the viewpoint, it’s a 1 000 m drop down the mountain and one can see as far as Kruger and beyond on a clear day. You will need your comfortable walking shoes as there are various paths and trails to the lookout points. It takes the average person around 15-20 minutes to get to the top, and you will be walking through a natural rainforest, which is itself quite something.
Bourke’s Luck Potholes is a magnificent natural formation created by hundreds of years of water erosion. The Bourke’s Luck potholes have round carvings and holes in all sorts of shapes and different sizes. The attraction is formed in the red sandstone, where the Treur River and Blyde River join to form a single channel of water. Your guide will brief you on the history of the region and guests can use footbridges and walk over the chasms, looking down at the water flowing through the cracks and holes. There are also several small but beautiful waterfalls scattered in the area. We spend about 1 hour here and all the walking is a great workout as you can expect to cover about 1km in total.
Blyde River Canyon is the 3rd largest canyon in the world. The canyon is over 40km long and is as deep as 1 200m. The canyon contains vast amounts of plant life, with rivers and dams making up the floor of the canyon. At a certain lookout point above the canyon, guests get to see another natural beauty of the Panorama Tour: the 3 Rondavels. The 3 Rondavels get their name from their appearance which is similar to Rondavel houses, which is a traditional hut commonly built in Africa. These 3 outcrops stand prominently from within the landscape.
You will also visit Lisbon Falls, a beautiful waterfall that has a strong flow of water throughout the year.
Lunch and some curio shopping will be in the misty, green town of Graskop, famous for its scrumptious pancakes, and that is exactly what we will have for our lunch on the day. There are some unique small shops and guests will have enough time to enjoy a stroll through the town.
After a day of excitement and unworldly scenes, we arrive back at the lodge at about 4 pm to enjoy a relaxing drink, cool off in the pool and have dinner at the lodge, before preparing for an early start as we go on the last Kruger Park morning safari the next day.
(Breakfast is included, Lunch is on your own account)
It’s an early start as we leave the lodge before sunrise and head to the Kruger. Your guide will focus on finding animals we could not find on the first 2 safaris. We keep an extra eye out for lions and leopards, who are most active in the cool early mornings.
The Kruger National Park has 148 mammal species and over 500 bird species, and your guide will help you find as many as possible. No two safaris are ever the same and the Kruger has a huge network of roads to choose from. Guides will drive in different areas of the park in different seasons, giving clients the chance to see more wildlife.
After a short breakfast and coffee stop, we will continue with the safari, returning to the lodge at around 12 pm. Here you can say goodbye to your guide and freshen up before the journey back to Johannesburg.
Clients are collected by the shuttle at around 12:30 pm, and we return to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport’s shuttle terminal or lodges within a 5 km radius of the airport, arriving between 17:00 – 18:00 pm
NB: Clients flying out of OR Tambo International on the last day should please not book their flight any earlier than 20:00 pm for Domestic Flights and 21:00 pm for International Flights.
