At this time of the year, there is much excitement in the air! The days are growing in length, the weather is lusciously warm, and the scent of blooming flowers can be enjoyed everywhere. August is one of the most magical times of the year to travel to the park and enjoy an authentic Kruger Park safari. It is the end of winter, so the temperature is just perfect and it is still quite dry, which means the ability to see wildlife is at its maximum.
For this reason and so many more, guests from all over the world choose to travel to the Kruger now and to make the most of your time here in August, we’re going to give you a handful of tips and some information about what to expect from your safari this month.
The park has not seen good rainfall for a couple of months now. Greenery is just about none existent in some places, and with the dryness and the lack of vegetation, things are really dusty. When out on your safari drive as well as when you are back in your accommodation, you can expect to get quite dusty and dirty, so don’t pack too many pieces of white clothing. And remember, since the air is so dry, it is going to leave your skin feeling very dehydrated, so pack some extra moisturiser and try to remember to drink plenty of water throughout your stay.
If you are driving yourself through the park, now is certainly the best time to head to one of the parks many waterholes, dams and rivers. The month of August is about in the middle of the really dry season, so animals are going to frequent water spots to grab a drink. This means, you can increase your chance of seeing something fantastic if you focus part of your trip on going to a water point. You can increase your chances if you go to a dam or waterhole in the early morning, lunchtime or evening.
The winter cold is certainly on its way out now, and soon, you won’t want to be spending time around the fire, bundled up warm. This is now the time to make the most of those cold evenings spent enjoying the heat of a fire, either inside or out. In just a month or so, the fire will only be used to cook a meal, so for now, just enjoy living in this season.
It’s not too hot or too cold in the Kruger in August, and this month is really your last chance to have a winter safari this year.
