In 1927, when the first visitors to the Kruger National Park entered by the only gate, Numbi, and travelled along the few barely there gravel roads in their heavy, slow vehicles, there was pretty much only one way to see the park, and Kruger safari packages were unheard of.
Fast forward about a hundred years, and the Kruger has become a household name across the globe; it has welcomed millions upon millions of guests, and unlike those early adventurers, these days travellers are spoiled for choice when it comes to the way in which they get to explore what is the world’s most iconic natural habitat.
Kruger safari packages come in all shapes and sizes.
You can go rustic and opt for a stripped-back budget tour, or you can go all out and treat yourself to the most exclusive wildness stay, one complete with midnight manicures ordered straight to your room, and internationally acclaimed gourmet menus to tuck into.
Working out which of the various Kruger safari packages suits you is as much about your budget and how much you’d like to spend it as it is about the pace at which you want to see the park, and whether or not you want a completely private experience.
Ultimately, the choice you make has little to do with anything other than your travel preferences.
There is no right or wrong way to see the Kruger, but one thing you don’t want is to end up booking a package that falls short of the mark.
The Various Types of Kruger Safari Packages
A simple Google search for “Kruger safari packages” will present you with a wide selection of options.
And while the various packages are all fairly different in terms of price, accommodation and activities, for the most part Kruger safari packages generally have similar structures.
Most packages fall into five broad categories: short group safaris, long safaris designed to give you extra time in the wild, luxury safaris (sometimes inside private concessions), and fully private arrangements where the vehicle and guide belong to your group alone. Each has its own character, and none is a lesser version of another.
Most classic safaris are shared, meaning your safari vehicle will have your group plus a bunch of strange faces who might just end up becoming your new best friend, while any safari marketed as private will give you a vehicle just for your group. Shared vehicles can accommodate between 6 and 9 guests, which is enough to keep the atmosphere sociable without ever feeling overcrowded.
Safaris are also split up according to the number of days you’ll spend in the park.
3-day safaris, 4-day safaris and 5-day safaris are the norm, but you will also find morning, afternoon or full day safaris as well as safaris that take place over 10 days or more.

3 Day Kruger Safari Packages
Three days is enough for a genuinely good safari.
Most 3-day safari packages concentrate on travelling through the southern Kruger, the busiest but also the most wildlife-dense part of the park, with morning and afternoon game drives on both days.
Accommodation for the 2 nights will usually be at a lodge just outside a gate or at a camp within the park; transfers from Johannesburg or Nelspruit are included, and there is an excellent chance of Big Five sightings, since the southern region is very well-known for being the preferred habitat for these animals.
A 3-day safari will give you enough time to get comfortable, and if luck is on your side during your trip, you will leave the park more than satisfied with the experience.
4 Day Kruger Safari Packages
Where a 3-day trip is essentially giving you 2 days in the park, most 4-day safari packages add a partial arrival and departure day on either side of two full days, often with room for additional afternoon and morning safaris on the first and last day.
Past guests who’ve been on a 4-day trip will often describe this length as the one where you get properly settled in and forget about the anxiety that tends to accompany shorter trips. Knowing that after 2 days in the park you have to rush again can somewhat taint the experience, unless you are familiar with such a pace.
Sightings on a 4-day safari, especially a private tour, become less about luck on a single drive and more about recognising wildlife behaviour, since a guide who has already watched a pride for two days knows roughly where to look on the third.
5 Day Kruger Safari Packages
A 5-day Kruger park safari (or more days, if you have the time) is the ideal amount of time to spend in the park.
Most 5-day safaris will take you out of the south into the central regions such as Satara or Olifants, where the bush opens into savannah and predator sightings, of cheetah and wild dog in particular, are more commonly reported.
This is usually also the shortest itinerary in which to include a guided bush walk with an armed ranger, tracking on foot rather than watching from a vehicle, along with at least one night drive.
For photographers or repeat visitors who have already covered the basics, the extra two days buy you a lot more activity and wildlife variety.
Luxury Kruger Packages
Luxury safaris generally take place in one of the numerous private concessions bordering the park, places that permit off-road driving and night drives that the Kruger does not, and luxury Kruger safari packages typically include all meals, drinks, and two daily guided drives, either within the concession or within the Kruger itself.
The difference between a luxury package and a standard Kruger trip is both the lodgings and the way in which the private concession is organised.
In concessions, there are fewer vehicles at each sighting, a tracker riding on a bonnet seat, and a kitchen that will happily rework dinner around that unexpected late afternoon encounter.
Yes, it costs more, but every cent you spend is a cent well spent.
Private Packages
Private luxury safaris best suit honeymoons, multi-generational families, or anyone who has done the shared game drive before and would rather not repeat it.
Families travelling with younger children in particular tend to get a lot more out of a private safari by having more flexibility, since most lodges set a minimum age of (6 to 8 years) for game drives and older for guided bush walks. A private vehicle allows these age restrictions to be worked around far more easily than a shared one.
Those travelling solo on a tighter budget, however, may find a shared safari give better value without losing much of the experience.
Which package is right for you?
There is no single correct answer here, only a better fit for how you actually like to travel. To give you an idea, this is one way to work out which package is right for you:

Dry season, from roughly May to September, tends to reward shorter itineraries particularly well, since sparse vegetation and reliable waterholes concentrate wildlife into predictable spots. Green season, from November to April, suits the longer 5-day and private itineraries a little more, as the bush is lush, the light softer for photography, and newborn wildlife plentiful, though sightings can take a touch more patience to find among the thicker foliage
