Rough Scaled Plated Lizard [Gerrhosaurus major]


The Scaled Plate Lizard  is a rather stout and large that has a smallish head and large eyes. It has a lightly coloured brown back that grades to straw colour. The throat and chin of the lizard is cream in colour while the body is a greyish-brown. When mating season arrives, a pink colour develops on their throats. They reach lengths of 150 – 200mm in length.


This large lizard feeds on millipedes and insects as well as fruits and flowers.


The Rough Scaled Plated Lizard can be found in savannah areas of Africa from Togo to Ethiopia, all the way to the South-East and Maputo land.


The Plated Lizard breeds from August  and lays 2 – 6 large oval eggs from October – November. The eggs are laid in soft soil underneath logs or rocks for protection. The eggs are incubated  for 71 – 81 days.
