Scrub Hare [Lepus saxatilis]
Appearance
The Scrub Hare has a grizzled white-grey coat with white underparts. They have long grey ears and a black and white tail that becomes visible when fleeing.
Diet
The Scrub Hare feeds on short green grass but will result to eating leaves stems and rhizomes of dried up grass when things get dire.
Breeding
From September to February, the births of the Scrub hares reach a peak. They give birth throughout the year to between 1 and 3 leverets per litter. Triplets are more common during rainy seasons.
Behaviour
Scrub hares are solitary animals that may be accompanied by females or males during oestrus. They prefer scrub as well as tall grasslands and savannah areas. Scrub hares are commonly seen on a Kruger Park Safari and at rest camps.
