Serrated Hinged Terrapin

Appearance

The Serrated hinged terrapin is the largest hinged terrapin in the world. The shell is uniformly black in colour with a yellow centered pattern that is sharply defined by black markings. The Turtle’s actual body is an olive green colour.  It has a flat and wide head with eyes positioned more forwards on its head.

Diet

These terrapins feed primarily on aquatic prey like small fish, frogs, crabs, fruit, and snails.

Distribution

The Serrated Hinged Terrapin prefers tropical East Africa from Victoria Falls and Zambesi River, to the South of Zululand.

Breeding

A single female lays 7 – 25 eggs about 500m from the water’s edge between October and January and hatch from March to April.
