Day 2: Full Day Open Vehicle Safari in the Kruger National Park

All safaris start before sunrise as this is the best time of the day to enter the park. Not knowing what to expect, after a short drive to the park, we enter the park gates, and your guide will take you into an area that is popular for spotting wildlife. An early morning start will also give you a better opportunity to spot predators.

The lodge will arrange breakfast packs and after about 3 hours of driving in the park, your guide will stop for breakfast, a bathroom break, and a chance to grab a coffee. We then continue with the safari, exploring the Kruger’s various eco-zones, each of which has different wildlife. We also visit rivers and watering holes as well as plains and Bushveld regions, all areas within the park that boast large wildlife populations.

For lunch, we stop at a rest camp. This meal will be on your account. While at the camp there will be time to do some curio shopping or to indulge in a refreshing cold beer! The guide will then continue with the safari, as you make your way back towards the lodge. We arrive back at around 15:30 or 16:00 pm, with enough time to time to relax, swim and have a great dinner.

Day 4: Morning Safari and Transfer back to Johannesburg

This is the last safari of your trip and again we depart from the lodge before sunrise. During the morning, we will have another packed breakfast at one of the rest camps or at a picnic site.

On this day, the guide will focus on finding animals we couldn’t find on the first 2 Kruger Park safaris. The Kruger National Park has 148 mammal species and over 500 bird species. We especially hope to see lion and leopard as they are most active in the early mornings.

After a short breakfast and coffee stop, we will continue with the safari, and we will return to the lodge at around 12:00 pm.

Here you say goodbye to your guide and freshen up before you make the journey back to Johannesburg. 4 Day Best of Kruger Classic Safari FAQs

How many days do you need for a Kruger safari to see the Big 5 properly?

4 days is the sweet spot for most travellers. The 4-Day Best of Kruger Classic Safari gives you a sunset/night drive, two full-day safaris and a final morning drive, that’s over 26 hours of game viewing in the southern Kruger, an area known for its abundance of wildlife. This is long enough for excellent Big 5 and predator sightings without rushing.

Staying outside the park (like at Umbhaba Eco Lodge in Hazyview on this tour) is significantly cheaper and often will give you better value. This 4-day classic safari costs only R15 000 pp sharing and includes 3 nights in a 4-star lodge, all transfers, park fees and most meals. The same length of stay inside SANParks rest camps or private lodges can easily cost R25 000–R40 000+ per person.

The southern Kruger (where this entire 4-day classic safari operates) is widely regarded as the best region for first-timers and anyone wanting maximum animal sightings. It has the highest density of lions, leopards and rhinos in the entire park, plus excellent elephant and buffalo numbers, incredible landscapes and plenty of watering holes making it perfect for a short 4-day trip.

Absolutely, especially this classic version. You get almost three full days of game viewing (including a rare night drive), stay in comfortable 4-star accommodation just 15 minutes from the gate, and drive through the best park of the park, the southern section.

Kurt Safari’s 4-Day Best of Kruger Classic Safari at R15 000 per person sharing is one of the highest-rated and best-value options. It includes return transfers from OR Tambo, a night drive, two full-day and one morning open-vehicle safari, 3 nights at 4-star Umbhaba Eco Lodge, most meals and all park fees.
