The History of Walking Safaris in Kruger National Park

Walking safaris in the Kruger National Park go as far back as early as the 1960s.

The concept was introduced as a way to give visitors a more intimate and educational experience of the bush.

Dr Ian Player, a renowned conservationist, was instrumental in pioneering this initiative. He believed that walking safaris would help visitors gain a deeper appreciation of the environment and its inhabitants, which does a lot for creating a stronger commitment to conservation among those who go on such trips.

Initially, these safaris were conducted by experienced rangers who guided small groups through the park, focusing on tracking animals, identifying plants, and understanding the ecosystem. Over the years, walking safaris have evolved, but they remain true to their original purpose: to provide an authentic, on-foot encounter with the African wilderness.
