Most of us visiting the Kruger National Park, look at eye level or up to see what the park has on offer.\u00a0 Little do we realise that there are numerous smaller animals to be seen should we look a little lower to the ground.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a look at the \u201cSmall Five\u201d buck that you might see when on a Kruger Park safari<\/a> with Kurt Safari<\/a>.<\/h2>\n

Bushbuck<\/h3>\n

The Bushbuck<\/a> is closely related to the Kudu and Nyala but is only 70cm at shoulder height and weighs a maximum of 54kg.\u00a0 Bushbuck rams have dark grey-brown fur with white spots on the flanks and sport white \u201csocks\u201d.\u00a0 Bushbuck have extremely sharp horns and can be dangerous when wounded.\u00a0 The females are smaller with more pronounced spots and stripes.\u00a0 Bushbuck can be found at the base of mountains or along rivers as long as there is a source of water close by.\u00a0 Bushbuck are extremely solitary animals and even the females have minimal interaction with the young, spending only a few hours a day with them.\u00a0 Leopards, Lions, Hyena and Cheetah are all predators of the bushbuck, but male bushbuck, if cornered will fight back and even attack if necessary.<\/p>\n

Grey and Red Duiker<\/h3>\n

The Red Duiker<\/a> is the smaller of the two Duikers found in the Kruger National Park, weighing about half of what the Grey Duiker<\/a> weighs.\u00a0 Grey Duikers can be up to 50cm at shoulder height and weigh about 25kg. Red Duiker is only 40 cm and weighs about 14 kg.\u00a0 While the Grey Duiker is yellowish brown in colour with a distinctive black down their noses, the Red Duiker is reddish-brown.<\/p>\n

Red Duikers live in bush near rivers, mountains and rocky areas. Preferable they live on their own but have been known to live in small herds. Grey Duikers prefer to live in the scrub and bushes on the own, only meeting up with mates in mating season.<\/p>\n

Steenbok<\/h3>\n

The Steenbok is brown to fawn in colour with pure white underparts and have long broad ears.\u00a0 Steenbok weighs only about 11kg and grown to a height of 52cm.\u00a0 Projecting above the eyes, only the rams sport upright, slender horns.\u00a0 Steenbok<\/a> can be found in open savannah lands that have taller grass and bushes that can be used as cover.\u00a0 Steenbok are commonly found throughout the Kruger National Park.\u00a0 Their natural predators include Leopard, Wild Dogs, Cheetah, Hyena and even Python and Martial Eagle.<\/p>\n

Klipspringer<\/h3>\n

Klipspringer, meaning \u201cRock Jumper\u201d is a very apt name for this animal as it seemingly moves on tiptoe with the greatest of ease in rocky territory.\u00a0 The Klipspringer<\/a> is only about 60cm in height and weighs roughly 12kg.\u00a0 This animal has a stocky build and the females are slightly larger than the males.\u00a0 Their coats vary in colour with shades of grey, yellow-brown or red with white underneath, white chin and lips.\u00a0 Ewes give birth to a single lamb after a gestation period of six months.\u00a0 Klipspringers reach maturity at a year, and are then evicted from the group.<\/p>\n

Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok<\/h3>\n

The Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok grazes at night or in the early morning hours and then rest during the heat of the day.\u00a0 These small mammals can be found in the northeastern Lebombo mountain range and north of that.\u00a0 The female and male Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok<\/a> have their own territories which they mark independently with dung middens.\u00a0 At shoulder height, the Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok is only 50cm and weighs about 8 kg.\u00a0 Rams have horns measuring about 6 \u2013 10 cm.\u00a0 Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok are browsers, feeding on leaves, young shoots of shrubs and bushes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
