{"id":9054,"date":"2017-07-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/take-an-adventure-to-the-northern-camp\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T17:48:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:48:23","slug":"take-an-adventure-to-the-northern-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/uk\/kruger-national-park-safaris\/take-an-adventure-to-the-northern-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Take an Adventure to the Northern Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Often known as \u201cThe Botanical Gardens\u201d of The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/uk\/\">Kruger National Park<\/a>, Punda Maria is one of the most northerly entrance gate camps and one that few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/uk\/\">Kruger Park safaris<\/a> visit.\u00a0 In 1919 Captain J J Coetser name his new post-Punda Maria; \u00a0\u201cPunda Milia\u201d meaning Zebra in Swahili and Maria after his wife. \u00a0In 1959 the camp&#8217;s name was changed to \u201cPunda Milia\u201d, but officially changed back to \u201cPunda Maria\u201d in 1981.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>But before the area even had a name, and well before Kruger Park safaris, it belonged to an African tribe living in the north of the country.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The area has a rich tribal history.\u00a0 A short distance to the east is a hill called Gumbandevu, after a chief who lived there long ago.\u00a0 It is said he had a daughter named \u201cKhama\u201d who was blessed with the miracle of rainmaking.\u00a0 When the rain did not come, tribesmen would come to her bearing gifts and a goat would be sacrificed. Khama would then <strong>gather the bones and climb the hill to weave her magic spell<\/strong> to bring the rain.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Gumbandevu Hills is still regarded as sacred to many tribes peoples and the hills are said to be haunted.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The camp was built in 1933\/34 and most of the original huts are still in use, although they have been upgraded to now include showers and toilets. The camp has bungalows, tents and a camping area.\u00a0 There is also a swimming pool at the camp, which offers some much welcome relief as the temperature ranges from the mid to high 30s in summer to the low 20s in winter. \u00a0The annual rainfall is about 500mm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Punda-Maria-gate-Kruger-park-safari.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The defining vegetation and wildlife<\/h3>\n<p>Punda Maria is in a sandveld area of the Kruger National Park and therefore does not have the abundance of game that is found in the more southern regions.\u00a0 It is, however, a birdwatchers paradise.\u00a0 Wild life living in this area consists of Zebra, Kudu, Elephant, Impala, Buffalo and Wild Dogs.\u00a0 Birds that are found in this area include the Eastern Nicator, Yellow-Billed Oxpecker, Grey-Headed Parrot and African Harrier-Hawk.<\/p>\n<p>Mahonie Loop, an excellent short drive (about 28km) from Punda Maria around the camp is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/uk\/kruger-park-tours-and-safaris\/\">scenically rewarding<\/a>.\u00a0 The area is renowned for its variety of trees and shrubs.\u00a0 Such varieties as the lavender tree, custard apple and broom cluster fig to name just a few can be found in this area.\u00a0 There are two dams on this drive, the <strong>Witsand and Matukwala<\/strong>.\u00a0 This rocky well-wooded area offer sanctuary to two of the Kruger National Parks rare antelope species, the Sharpe\u2019s Grysbok and smaller Suni.\u00a0 They are both shy secretive animals and it takes a keen eye to spot them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Kruger-National-Park-safaris-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Sharpes-Grysbok.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The northern roads less travelled<\/h3>\n<p>Taking the main road eastwards from Punda Maria gate to the camp, the landscape moves from sandveld to mopane tree savannah where elepants are normally seen.\u00a0 Before the road joins the Shingwedzi-Pafuri road there is another loop road which takes you to the Dzundzwini view site, at 600m it is one of the highest points in the northern area. The very rare \u201cPropeller Tree\u201d is found in this area, aptly named because its fruit sprout a shuttlecock of thin dragon-like wings which cause the seeds to spin like propellers to the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A must when in this area is a trip to Babalala Picnic Site<\/strong>.\u00a0 Situated next to a small water hole it\u2019s the best place for spotting cheetah in the north.\u00a0 Babalala is the stopover for migrant water birds.\u00a0 The corn crake, African crake and even the black crake are all possible sightings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kurtsafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Kruger-Park-Safaris-45.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Things to do in the camp<\/h3>\n<p>As one of the Kruger National Park\u2019s last camps up north, there is more to do than just spot the local wildlife. The camp is known to have a few activities, such as guided bush walks. The nearby bird hide will also give you the opportunity to sit back and watch the wildlife quench their thirst at the waterhole.
