Photographic Safari Guidelines:

In case you did not know, the Kruger National park is proudly the largest national park in South Africa and one of the largest parks in the world that is completely surrounded by inhabited land.

Given its size and diverse wildlife in designated areas, we do at least two game drives every day of your safari tour in the park. The duration of each safari ranges between 3 and 4 hours. We advise embarking on the first game drive of the day very early in the morning, as much of the wildlife rises with the sun. Evening game drives are equally wonderful because that’s when the predators of the park start hunting. Midday game drives are not advised, as it can become very hot and most animals seek shelter from the sun at this time.

Where are the best wildlife sightings in the Kruger National Park?

The Park is basically divided into three sections; Southern, central, and Northern.

The southern areas of the Kruger are by far the most frequented. Many tourists and South Africans visit this area every day as it has the highest density of wildlife, especially a variety of predators. There are a number of camps, like Berg-en-dal, Pretoriuskop, Skukuza and Lower Sabie, which are all great choices for accommodation. Hence its popularity and the high probability of wildlife sightings, we usually start the safari in the Southern Kruger and then move North.

The central area of the Kruger Park has much more open savannah plains and the camps are more widely spread. There are many really great wildlife areas and, believe it or not, it is well worth visiting in the dry winter season (May and October.) Satara is the main camp in this region and is situated in a great area. It is surrounded by dams and you can choose to travel North, South East or West from the campsite. In this respect, Satara offers the perfect accommodation for a photographic safari visit in the Kruger National Park. This area is famous for the great lion pride and also plains game like zebra, buffalo and giraffe are especially common in the central region.

The Northern area is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing areas in Kruger Park with an abundance of Elephants and Buffalo. It is a personal favourite place for Kurt due to its unique nature. We would advise to only visit this area between June and October as water is scarce during this time, forcing the magnificent wildlife to frequent the waterholes. The furthest Northern parts of the park that border Mozambique and Zimbabwe is an area known as Crooks corner. There are large fever tree forests that make for a magical photographic safari; a truly wild experience with very few visitors.

Please be sure to book at least 3 months in advance to avoid disappointment. These tours are exclusive and in high demand.

Suggested campsites on photographic safaris:

To avoid the hassles of setting up and taking down tents every day, we book bungalows or chalets with on suite facilities for these photographic safaris. Breakfast and dinner are included in the safari rates, but there is also a restaurant at each rest camp we will be staying at. Each photographer will be staying in their own bungalow or chalet unless otherwise arranged beforehand.

Our guides are handpicked for their professionalism and vast knowledge of the Kruger Park. They have much experience in photographic safaris and will endeavour to ensure that you have an unforgettable time in the park with countless new excellent pictures to show for it.

Depending on your needs, the photographic safari tours start and ends from either, ORTIA (JHB), KMIA (NSP), or Skukuza airport in the southern area of the park itself.
