Kruger closes roads as recent rains cause floods

The much needed summer rains have arrived late in the Kruger National Park this year, and while we are rejoicing, the recent downpours have been quite heavy and have resulted in some of the roads of the Park being closed.

Park officials are urging visitors to be cautious while driving in around the Park as heavy roads over the weekend have flooded low laying roads in the park.

SANParks recently via Facebook that Shingwedzi Camp has lost both telephone and cellphone signal, and the following roads have been closed until the flood waters recede:

  • Lower Sabie Section – closing all gravel roads, except for Salitje/Old Tshokwane Road. This section of the park has received 84mm of rain over the weekend.
  • Kingfisherspruit Section (Orpen) – Closing all gravel roads. The area received an incredible 120 mm rain.

In light of the flooding, visitors are urged to obey the rules and avoid those areas which are currently closed. If guests come across a road which appears flooded, visitors are urged not to attempt to cross it but to instead turn back and find an alternative route.

Rains are expected to continue over the course of the next few days.
