And the difference between the two is very easy to see.

Where an ordinary cheetah’s fur coat is dotted, the king has bold dark stripes and soft, merged blotches, as though someone drew it with a brush and a very patient hand.

It is still Acinonyx jubatus. It still has the same long legs, same black tear marks, and that same astonishing acceleration.

The only difference between a king cheetah and its cousin is the pattern.

King Cheetah vs Cheetah: How to Tell Them Apart

You cannot mistake these two; the pattern is distinctly different. But if you come across a cheetah in the bush and you want to be able to tell if it’s a king cheetah or not, start by having a look at its back.

A regular cheetah is spotted from its neck to its rump, whereas a king cheetah has three broad dark stripes running down the spine, and its flanks have large blotches that look smudged together.

For comparison, you can look for these features:

King cheetah and spotted cheetah compared

Funzionalità

Ghepardo

King cheetah

Body markings

Small, solid, round spots

Large blotches, some merged

Back

Spotted

Three bold stripes along the spine

Tear marks

Sì

Sì

Likelihood on safari

Commonly seen with patience

Extremely rare (last sighting in 1986)

Why Does the King Cheetah Have Stripes and Blotches?

The pattern comes from a recessive gene, and for one to be born, both parents must carry it.

A king cheetah can appear in a litter with ordinary-looking cheetah siblings. Think of it as a sort of albino, but instead of being white, its pattern is darker and different.

A 2012 genetic study traced the recessive gene that creates king cheetahs to the same gene that gives domestic tabby cats their blotched coats.

In other words, the king cheetah is closer to a family quirk than a separate animal.

Is the King Cheetah a Separate Species?

No, though it was once believed to be.

In 1927, the naturalist Reginald Pocock named it Acinonyx rex after seeing a particularly impressive skin from Zimbabwe, and the idea held for decades.

It was only much later on, in 1981, when king cheetah cubs were born to normally coated parents at the De Wildt Cheetah Centre near Pretoria, that the entire theory changed.

Where Have King Cheetahs Been Seen in The Wild?

The first record of these big cats being spotted in the wild dates back to 1926 in what is now Zimbabwe.

Since then, there have been scattered reports of sightings coming from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and northern South Africa, high up in the Kruger.

Wild sightings are more than scarce, and when someone does think they’ve seen one, the sighting will often be heavily debated, which is sort of what gives the king cheetah such an allure.

Most people who have seen one met it at a breeding centre such as De Wildt or at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.

Could You See a King Cheetah in The Kruger National Park?

Technically yes, but honestly, it is a very, very long shot.

A king cheetah in the Kruger has not been reliably documented in decades, although the gene exists in the wider region, so a sighting cannot be ruled out. Treat the possibility of such an encounter as the greatest of safari gifts, but don’t plan your safari around it or add it to your bucket list. You’ll just end up disappointed.

What the park does give you is ordinary cheetahs, and watching one scan the grass from a termite mound or showing off its impressive speed is still an awe-inspiring sighting.

How rare is the king cheetah?

The IUCN estimates roughly 6 500 adult cheetahs remain across Africa, and king cheetahs are a tiny fraction of those.

Because the gene is recessive, two carriers have to meet and breed for a king to be born.

The Kruger’s own cheetahs live at low density across a wide range, which really makes any cheetah sighting something extra special. At the moment, it is estimated that fewer than 300 cheetahs live in the Kruger, and while there are just over 100 breeding pairs, cheetahs are not monogamous, so there’s no way of saying how many cubs are born each year.

Where to Look for Cheetahs on a Kruger Safari

If you are going to visit the park with the hope of seeing a cheetah, you’ll have the best luck on the open grassland plains around Satara and Orpen in the central Kruger, and along the open stretches south of Tshokwane, and south of Skukuza towards Pretoriuskop.

Cheetahs love the open ground, where they can sprint at full speed.

To improve your chances of seeing cheetahs, you should:

Go out at first light and in the late afternoon, when cheetahs hunt (they can hunt for as much as 3 hours before or after sunset, making their hunting habits rather different compared to other big cats).

Look for termite mounds and fallen logs, which they use as lookouts.

Listen for impala alarm calls.

Ask your guide about fresh tracks on the sand roads.

Guides who work the park daily read these signs quickly and know more or less where cheetahs are most often seen, which is why many travellers choose Safari Kruger Big 5.
