The road trip begins early with pickup from your Cape Town or Stellenbosch accommodation. As the city fades behind you, you’ll travel on Route 62, South Africa’s longest wine route and easily one of its most scenic. Along the way, you’ll stop at one of the quirky Karoo farm stalls to buy homemade treats and local goodies.
By mid-afternoon, you will arrive in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world and gateway to the Cango Caves. These ancient limestone chambers, some dramatic, some delightfully narrow, have been carved over millennia. You can choose between the accessible Heritage Tour, where you’ll hear the caves echoing acoustics and see ancient rock formations, or the daring Adventure Tour (if available), where you’ll crawl, climb, and wriggle through tight spaces carved by time.
The evening in Oudtshoorn is yours to spend as you please. You can go to a restaurant in town or (subject to availability) opt for a traditional South African braai that will have you exploring local favourites like ostrich kebabs, ‘boerewors’ sausage, and potbrood bread.
Overnight Stay: Hlangana Lodge or similar 4-star accommodation.
Travel time: ±3 hrs / ±250 km
Today, you’ll start your morning with an optional visit to a private reserve to meet elephants rescued from poaching. Your guides will share the heartfelt stories of these gentle giants while you photograph and observe them in peaceful natural surroundings (additional cost).
Then it’s off to the beautiful Wilderness region, where you’ll paddle through reed-lined waterways on a kayak adventure. It’s the perfect way to connect with nature at a slower pace, and you’ll be treated to the peaceful sounds of birdsong and rustling reeds.
After all that relaxation, it’s time for the adrenaline junkies to get ready, as the next stop of the trip is the world’s highest bridge bungy jump at Bloukrans Bridge awaits! At 216 meters, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but if such an experience is not your cup of tea, watching from the sidelines is just as exciting. Those not taking the leap can instead go for a SkyWalk, a scenic Zipline, or a relaxed nature walk near the bridge.
You’ll spend the evening in the slow-paced coastal town of Sedgefield or in Wilderness.
Overnight Stay: Dolphin Dunes Guesthouse or similar 4-star accommodation.
Travel time: ±6 hrs / ±450 km
No trip to South Africa is complete without a safari, and today begins with a 4×4 game drive in a malaria-free private reserve. With your expert ranger leading the way, you’ll scan the bush for lion, giraffe, rhino, zebra, kudu, wildebeest, and more.
From here, your journey continues through the Garden Route’s green landscapes, wrapping up as you return to Cape Town between 5:00 and 9:00 pm, depending on traffic and your final drop-off location. You can find more info about drop-off times online at https://hotspots2c.co.za/agent#dropoff
