Your day begins with a relaxed morning pickup from your accommodation in either Cape Town or Stellenbosch. As you leave the city behind, the rolling vineyards of the Cape Winelands come into sight, giving you an inviting preview of what’s to come.
The first destination on the itinerary is the iconic Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate, where you’re greeted with stunning panoramic views, the most adorable and playful goats, and an introduction to the estate’s artisanal cheeses, velvety wines, and rich olive oils. With an on-site cheesery and welcoming atmosphere, Fairview will delight all of your senses.
After you’ve sampled the wine and cheese, you’ll leave Fairvoew and travel to the village of Franschhoek, where history, beauty, and flavour collide in the most spectacular fashion.
While here, you’ll step aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which is a vintage-style, open-air tram that moves slowly through the vine-laced farm valleys. With a glass of fine local wine in hand, your short journey (of about 5 to 10 minutes) is nothing short of magical. Depending on the day’s route, you’ll disembark at either Rickety Bridge or Plaisir Wine Estate, both of which have a serene setting and a selection of three estate wines to indulge in.
As lunchtime approaches, the gastronomic heart of the Cape Winelands welcomes you to tuck in. Franschhoek’s lively main street and weekend farmer’s market have everything from gourmet bistros to artisanal stalls and spontaneous musical performances. While here, you can choose a leisurely charcuterie platter or enjoy one of the local delicacies at a cosy café, as this is your time to treat yourself.
The final stop is the historic Muratie Wine Estate, which is hidden away in the beautiful Knorhoek Valley. Established in 1685, Muratie is a rustic change to the day’s earlier stops. Here, you’ll enjoy a unique tasting of sweet, port-style wines in the very tanks that once held some of the Cape’s earliest vintages which include South Africa’s first Pinot Noir.
Muratie’s moody cellars and timeworn walls are the perfect place to end your perfect day.
Note: The route and winery stops may vary depending on availability, with equally interesting alternatives provided where needed.
